I feel highly honored and privileged to be given this opportunity of serving as Head of Nursing Sciences Department. The Department has been at the forefront of Nursing Education in Northern Nigeria, leading the way in the development of Baccalaureate, Master of science (MSc), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Nursing programs. As students, you are a most important part of our community of scholars, and we value your contributions and participation because without you the department will not have existed. You are our partners in advancing the Nursing Sciences Department toward international educational standards. Our focus is on a very special type of nursing student – one who wishes to excel in the profession. The department is accredited by the National University Commission, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria as well as the West African Health Board (WAHEB). As our returning students already know, learning at the Nursing Sciences Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria extends far beyond our classrooms, laboratories, and libraries. You have to understand that; Nursing is a self-regulated profession. Nurses are responsible and accountable for providing competent and ethical practice to their clients, the public, their colleagues, and themselves. Nurses have a professional responsibility to continuously seek to improve their practice through critical self-reflection, scholarship, research, and innovation. As the world gets smaller through globalization, the demand for culturally competent nurses increases.....More
The aim of undergraduate studies in the discipline of Nursing is:
- To graduate professional nurse practitioners who will utilize theoreticalmodels, knowledge derived from research, and critical thinking skills to assist individuals and communities adapt to changing health needs byproviding reliable, effective and acceptable professional health service in the homes, communities and health care institutions and the society atlarge.
- To produce professional nurse practitioners who will be intellectually stimulated to continually improve their practice skills through the utilization of research findings and a commitment to self-development.
- To provide sound academic professional background for professional nurses who would be capable of working anywhere in the world with sufficient management ability to play a leadership role in training and the practiceof nursing science.
